Heaton Lookout
Located in Awaba State Forest you get what I think to be the most amazing lookout in the area, Heaton lookout. With an elevation of around 420m facing to the East this lookout gives you unobstructed views out over Lake Macquarie, Lake Munmorah, Budgewoi Lakes and Tuggerah Lakes.
Heaton lookout provides Picnic tables and Fire Pits making for a brilliant place to stop and have a picnic lunch both hot or cold. It also provides drop toilets and garbage bins so there is no excuse to leave rubbish behind.
The views from this lookout range as far as Stockton Beach to the North of Newcastle right out over the coast and their beautiful lake systems as far South as probably Terrigal or Copacabana, a distance of around 80km of coast line. Bring your binoculars and you can see for miles. Seriously.
A little further North along the road and you will find another picnic area with some old machinery that would of been used
in the area during the logging days. Further up there is a communication tower where you can turn right down to Lookout Point and a Hang Glider Launch. Some people have camped here although the small sign specifically states it is not allowed in the area. Continuing straight on the main road you find a couple more lookouts facing North towards Mount Vincent. Almost across from the communications tower there is another over grown trail, Taylors Road, leading to Taylors Rd Lookout which gives you a North/Westerly view across to Macleans Lookout & over Quorrobolong and Bunkerville.
